The Horseshoe

An award winning experience!

The Horseshoe, Eddleston is a restaurant with rooms that looks after a small number of guests at a time but those guests are looked after very, very well. Whilst we could fit in more dining tables our philosophy is keep it small and do it well. There are just ten tables in the restaurant. There is also a private dining room for parties of up to fourteen.

Luxury accommodation

Eight lovely bedrooms have been created from the beautifully restored Victorian village school house which sits just behind the Horseshoe. You’ll see this building when you pull into the Horseshoe private car park. If you are staying over-night please leave your luggage with your vehicle, come to the Horseshoe main entrance to check-in and we will then bring your luggage to your bedroom for you. The bedrooms are rated 4 Gold Stars by the AA Guide; though modest in size they all have en-suite showers, bathrobes, luxurious local handmade organic toiletries, mineral water, tea and coffee making trays with fresh milk, fresh fruit and homemade cake. Breakfast at the Horseshoe is a meal considered as important for us as dinner and we were delighted to receive in 2012 and again in 2013 an award from the AA Guide for our outstanding breakfasts.

The restaurant

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Wednesday until Sunday. Because everything is fresh there are changes to the menus on a daily basis. The restaurant is luxuriously furnished with candle-lit antique polished wood tables, deep pile Axminster carpet and striking, original works of modern art. There is also a charming flag-stoned lounge with luxurious sofas, chesterfields and a wood burning stove. The lounge has a bar brimming with Single Malt Whisky, Scottish Gins, imported Vodkas, Cognac and Armagnac and micro-brewery local real ales by the bottle. The whole building is candle-lit at night.

The Horseshoe is available for exclusive use for special parties and is perfectly suited to looking after groups of around sixteen guests.

Our General Manager Mark Slaney has for thirty years worked in five star hotels and Michelin listed restaurants but he brings to the Horseshoe an easy-going manner and a depth of knowledge of the area having lived in and enjoyed The Scottish Borders for a great number of years. As a keen walker and motorist he has a good knowledge of off the beaten track routes which will tempt any motorist. Mark is always happy to recommend or chat to our guests about the many memorable journeys that are waiting to be discovered in The Scottish Borders.

Our Head Chef Alistair Craig was formerly Senior Sous Chef at the Michelin Starred Montagu Arms. If you’d like to read about Alistair and his team, their passion for sourcing the best of local produce and find out about their typical day follow the kitchen link.

Our Restaurant Manager, Shashi Prakash joined us from the Michelin Starred Martin Wishart restaurant. Previously he spent time at Seaham Hall and Gleneagles.

Our extensive wine list is compiled by grape variety and style and is driven by what tastes good to me so in that respect it is a very personal list and what may be considered by some eclectic because it encompasses so many grape varieties

You’ll find a local guide in your bedroom with suggestions for walks and sight-seeing, along with numerous novels and travel books to Scotland. Bring a book with you across to the lounge and curl up before the wood burning stove and plan your time in the Scottish Borders. One of the team is always on hand throughout the day if you fancy a pot of tea, glass of wine or a wee dram.

The Horseshoe is close to the A709 Yarrow Valley Road- a fantastic drive for motorbikes passing lochs and a terrific 300ft waterfall and traversing a 1000ft pass!

Please check our website for latest details of our promotions; we have a private car park in front of the former Victorian Schoolhouse where we have 8 bespoke bedrooms, we are always happy to let our guest use our jet-wash after a muddy day exploring our delightful surroundings.

Our food is invariably fresh, within season and where ever possible local; this is something that we are truly passionate about.

We have our own Wee Shop located near Reception where you can buy an ever changing selection of handmade Scottish Artisan souvenirs in the past these have included handbags, jewellery, original watercolours.

Local area

The Horseshoe is located just eighteen miles south Edinburgh city centre in the village of Eddleston, a few miles north of the market town of Peebles which lies on the banks of the Tweed Valley in the heart of the Scottish Borders.

The Tweed valley and the Scottish Borders once famous for its fine woollen mills is now a tourist destination, appreciated for its accessibility (Edinburgh International airport is only thirty minutes drive from the Horseshoe) and sought after for its excellent recreational offerings: Scotland’s premier mountain biking destination at 7Stanes Glentress, fifteen minutes from the Horseshoe, The Tweed river offers first rate salmon fishing, the Borders has numerous stately homes that are open to the public and the valleys are studded with castles and ruined river towers.

The Border hills offer magnificent walking: Broad Law south of Peebles rises to 2,756’ (840 metres) and is ranked 15th in the UK County/Unitary Authority High points of Great Britain. There are thirty miles of empty upland between Peebles and Moffat for the serious walker to explore. Upper Tweeddale is a designated National Scenic Area and for those who enjoy exploring from the comfort of their vehicle the Border valleys offer lochs and waterfalls and secluded country inns and miles of roads where you will hardly see another driver

Great local biking routes

The Scottish Borders is a biker's playground, with only a single motorway for miles around, the area is scattered with beautiful winding roads, country lands and sweeping A roads to explore.

It really takes quite some doing to have anything other than a fantastic day's biking in the Borders!

BikeFest Kelso

BMF Bikefest Kelso, held each July, brings bikes, entertainment, music and above all great fun to the Borders region.  A popular and fun weekend event, with the added bonus of so many glorious biking roads right on the doorstep.
