About Northumberland
Northumberland is an area oozing with real biking appeal.
This region was the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. It was the main frontline for the the ancient Border struggles between England and Scotland with Hadrian’s Wall being testament to this long running feud. The wall itself no longer demarcates the borders of England and Scotland but runs neatly East to West through Northumberland. You can actually ride parallel to the wall for twenty miles along the B6318, a straight but real roller coaster of a road.
Northumberland National Park featuring the stunning Kielder Water has some fantastic scenery and can almost have you believing you’ve escaped to the Alaskan wilderness. A perfect start or end to a journey if you’re catching the ferry at Newcastle.
Newcastle, the largest city in the area, reinvigorated its industrial past, is now a city crammed with cultural attractions, great shops, and an energetic nightlife.
Those looking to explore will find the barren slopes of the North Pennines to the East, worlds away from the forests of Northumberland but dramatic in their own right with some thrilling passes cutting through them. South of Northumberland lies County Durham, famous for its lovely university town and magnificent twelfth-century cathedral, and Tyne and Wear dotted with remnants of its industrial pastime.
