Supportive mates

13th January 2016 by  in Motorcycle Touring & Travel, The Dex Files

It’s not only Number One Son who’s spotted an opportunity in me potentially heading to Scotland for a few months. Noddy, Tidy Tim and DA have all popped round in the last few days to “casually” ask where I’ll be staying and if there will be room for visitors… Clearly, they’ve all worked out that  [Read full post…]

My favourite road in Scotland is…

30th December 2015 by  in Motorcycle Touring & Travel, The Dex Files

Actually, I’m not sure I can choose one. There are so many great roads in Scotland. Obviously, the A87 from Invergarry to Uig on Skye is a contender. It gallops through the glens, loops around the lochs, motors past the moors and mountains and castles and generally packs a massive punch in the epic-scenery stakes.  [Read full post…]

One door closes…

28th December 2015 by  in The Dex Files

One of my major contracts is coming to an end. It’s with a London-based finance company and it’s kept me busy for one or two days a week (more or less) for the past few years. Obviously, the prospect of losing what has been about 30% of my business has been worrying me, but I’ve  [Read full post…]

Ayr to Turnberry – A719 – MotoGoLoco Classics

3rd July 2015 by  in MotoGoLoco Classic Motorcycle Routes

As you leave the town of Ayr (Inbhir Àir, “Mouth of the River Ayr”), head south on the A719 and visit the birthplace of Robert Burns, Scotland’s most famous bard. Jump back on the coastal main road and check out the Electric Brae, or Croy Brae as it’s known locally. The hill is an optical  [Read full post…]

Stuart & Jo Dowell’s Scottish Weekender

30th June 2015 by  in Accommodation Reviews, Competition Winners

Amazingly I won a weekend away courtesy of James at MotoGoLoco so I decided to make it into a long weekend taking Jo (wife) on my KTM 990. We departed the East Midlands and hit the A1, then took in a couple of diversions for lunch in Helmsley. Many memories of FarmYard parties past… slightly  [Read full post…]

The late bookers

29th June 2015 by  in Motorcycle Touring & Travel, The Dex Files

Dale Caesar phoned me at lunchtime. He and Pete had enjoyed the Scotland trip the other weekend so much that they were wondering… was there still time for them to come to Spain with us? I very carefully didn’t say anything other than – not sure, here are the ferries and hotels we’re using, best  [Read full post…]

Nicely done up

16th June 2015 by  in Motorcycle Touring & Travel, The Dex Files

It’s been a while since I’ve stopped in Moffat. As normal, we were staying in the Buccleuch Arms – the garages for the bikes make it our preferred stop every time. They’ve done up the dining room over the winter: very nice. The new Beef Rib is a very welcome addition to the menu, too…

Spittal of Glenshee (A93) – MotoGoLoco Classics

3rd February 2015 by  in MotoGoLoco Classic Motorcycle Routes

A glorious roller-coaster of a road; bends, straights, dips and crests, all set against the magnificent backdrop of the Cairngorms National Park. THE best route North between Dundee/Edinburgh and Inverness, avoiding the (hateful!) A9 too. This is what motorcycling is all about. Route Map & GPS Files >View/download the route map and transfer it to  [Read full post…]

Itchy Feet…

2nd December 2014 by  in Motorcycle Touring & Travel

I made the ‘mistake’ of binge-watching the Long Way Round on Netflix over the weekend, and it’s re-ignited an enormous feeling of wanderlust. This isn’t a new phenomena by any means; the urge to grab a coffee and a map, stick a pin in it and ride there has lurked beneath the surface for as long as  [Read full post…]

Bealach na Bà – MotoGoLoco Classics

17th November 2014 by  in MotoGoLoco Classic Motorcycle Routes

Bealach na Bà is a historic pass through the mountains of the Applecross peninsula, in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands and the name of a famous twisting, single-track mountain road through the pass and mountains. Starting at the beautiful postcard picturesque village of Lochcarron, the pass snakes it’s way up through the mountains before  [Read full post…]
