Stuart & Jo Dowell’s Scottish Weekender

Amazingly I won a weekend away courtesy of James at MotoGoLoco so I decided to make it into a long weekend taking Jo (wife) on my KTM 990.

We departed the East Midlands and hit the A1, then took in a couple of diversions for lunch in Helmsley. Many memories of FarmYard parties past… slightly blurry ones due to varying degrees of drunken-ness, mixed in with the sight of babbling brooks and quacking ducks! Onwards and upwards via the A66 with some stunning scenery, accompanied on the iPod by Dumpy’s Rusty Nuts!

We finished the day’s journey at our B&B in Bowness on Solway, a tranquil little village at the start/end of Hadrian’s Wall. Super overnight stop at Shore Gate House sitting right on the banks of the estuary, enjoyed by hikers about to embark on the 84 mile trip that covers the original route of the wall.

Up next morning after a great nights sleep to a blanket of drizzle, we made our farewells after eating an excellent breakfast and set off to Bonny Scotland via the A7 to near Teviothead, then hit the B roads across country towards Moffat. Exceptional scenery alternating between glens and lochs, drizzle/cloud and bright sunshine.

Upon arriving at Moffat we were greeted by Clint at the Buccleuch Arms Hotel, our ‘home’ for the next 2 nights.

Really impressed by the warmth of the greeting and absolutely love the idea of the individual, lockable garages for the motorbikes which was only surpassed by the beautiful food and ambiance of the place. Dave the proprietor (a motorcyclist himself) has made this a ‘must visit’ for any motorcyclists in the area, or anyone else for that matter…

The hotel had a number of guests who had been attending a classic car rally that was held in the town over the weekend, and the restaurant has deservedly developed a great reputation with the locals too!

Today we will do the short, scenic tour around the 3 Lochs Run which again has been posted on MotoGoLoco Maps and downloaded from here, then tomorrow, sadly, the long ride home.

Many thanks to all who helped make this trip a memorable one.

Stu Dowell

(PS – Completed the run round the 3 Lochs Run… Great roads, great views, Dave and Polly (MotoGoLoco tech!) are bang on with their recommendations!!)
