One door closes…

One of my major contracts is coming to an end. It’s with a London-based finance company and it’s kept me busy for one or two days a week (more or less) for the past few years. Obviously, the prospect of losing what has been about 30% of my business has been worrying me, but I’ve been looking about for other work to replace it – and I think I’m in luck.

Actually, it’s the same company. The contract I’ve been servicing is ending because they’re relocating some of their capacity to Scotland. Which means they need a new site up there: they’ve just had an audit that declared the facility they thought was ready for them to move into isn’t up to spec. So they’ve asked me to go up and prep a new one.

This won’t be for a few months, but it’s basically a three-month full-time job, based just outside Edinburgh. After which I’ll revert to servicing it on a part-time basis, but probably one block of five days a month rather than one or two days a week.

Now, I’m not telling you this because I think you’ll be interested in the shifts in my employment status. It’s a kind of build-up to…

I’ll probably be doing loads of riding in Scotland. In Spring, heading into Summer. And then once a month after that I’ll be riding to Scotland.

Clearly, there are going to be challenges. I’ll have to make sure my other clients are happy while I’m away. More importantly, I’ll have to make sure The Fair Lady Scully is happy. But just the thought of having all those great Scottish roads on my doorstep is already making me happy.

I’ve started scouting roads I haven’t ridden for a while and looking for ones I haven’t ridden at all. My mouth’s already watering. I’ve been looking at routes on this website and on the Motorcycle Scotland website. It feels like I’d forgotten just how much great riding there is North of the Border.

I genuinely can’t wait…
