IOMTT 2017 – Mountain curcuit’s “Memory lane”

IOMTT 2017 – My first full lap of the Mountain Circuit this year and an odd one it was too.

Setting off at 05:10 in glorious sunshine, I was too late to avoid the bin lorries, delivery vans and early morning dog walkers.

But, that first lap was memorable not for my learning about the changes to the track since I was here last July for the Southern 100, but for a strange, almost melancholic mood as I remembered friends, colleagues, and  heroes of mine who had come to grief at points along the circuit.

Crosby, Ballaspur, Alpine, the 11th milestone, Caley’s, the 13th milestone, Guthrie’s, and Keppell Gate, all brought memories of people no longer here to enjoy their passion – funny how memories arise unbidden.

The second lap was more flowing and timed nicely to avoid the exodus from the belly of the Ben My Chree, and I’m fairly confident that the new tarmac at the Bungalow, and the 32nd, (renamed, “Dukes” since last year), will contribute to yet another race lap record.

Back in Mount Rule for coffee and a change of clobber prior to setting off down to the Billown Circuit to take up my flags @ The Dip, it feels as if I’ve never been away.

All the best,

Jim
