Great bit of road B6047 and beyond

Had to go to Market Harborough yesterday, so carried on to see my pal the hack in Melton Mowbray. The road between the two, the B6047, is one of his favourites. True, the southerly end now labours under another pointless 50mph limit which, predictably, none of the locals seem to bother observing. It’s a shame, because it’s a brilliantly twisty bit of road.

Then the B6047 crosses the A47 and gets great. The road swoops through a series of savage dips, turning at the bottom of each one before climbing again. There’s a short pause, to pass through a village, then a long stretch where it runs over a series of lumps as dramatic as the crested whoops of the A68 on the way to Scotland, but without any traffic (though apparently I got lucky: it’s a busier road these days than it used to be).

After coffee in Melton, I headed south again on the A606: a busier but just as majestic rollercoaster of a road that led me all the way to the A1, for the long, dull drudge back south. Still, between the B6047 and the A606 I felt like I’d had a proper ride. I bet you could link those two for a fabulous afternoon in the saddle.
