Daydreaming, again

22nd January 2019 by  in The Dex Files

Had an hour to kill between meetings yesterday and I started wondering what I’d do if I won the lottery.

It’s never productive, that kind of thinking. Not only because it’ll never happen (I never buy a ticket) but also because it’s endless.

Which bike would you have? All of them. Where would you ride them? Only on the finest roads, on the sunniest days. Where would you keep them? In the pits of your own personal race-track. What would you do, though, if the weather was bad? Fly to the identical, spare set-up on the other side of the world, where the seasons would be reversed.

See – foolish.

Then I set about thinking what I’d do if I won £15k. That’s much more practical. Because that involves thinking about trade-ins on my bikes. It involves thinking about destinations. It involves wondering how much of a PPI claim I might have, or will I get a tax rebate. Because though £15 grand is still a lot of money, it’s not an unattainable, irrelevant amount (not when your kids have left home and you’re working hard, anyway). Because that’s the kind of cash that could be saved, even if it takes a year or two and means a bit of penny-pinching in the meantime.

Because that might just make a biking daydream into a reality.

So I’ve started saving now. By the time I’ve reached my savings target, I’ll have decided which of my biking daydreams I’ll use the money for… Two years should be enough time to choose.
