My Triumph Explorer riding Welsh friend, Tidy Tim, has finally cracked and bought a sat nav. He surprised me by not getting the latest, top-of-the-line Garmin Zumo 590 but the more modest Zumo 340LM – the entry-level model – but he’d researched what he needed and says this does the lot.
Of course, it’s part of his prep for our Spanish trip, later in the year. He’s only ever travelled in Europe as part of our normal group, led by Dale Caesar, so never felt the need to have a nav to guide him around. Though he began to re-evaluate that after Dale managed to lose both Tim and me in the Mulhouse rush-hour on the last trip.
The next stage, of course, is for Tim to start plotting his own routes. I haven’t had the call yet, but I’m waiting for it… Tim’s not the most tech-savvy bloke and I predict that Garmin’s BaseCamp will fry his brain. I suspect the best bet will be for him to use the mapping facility on the MotoGoLoco site instead – it’s much, much simpler to use.
But I’ll let you know how he gets on.
